How to Tell Which Apps Are Draining Your Phone Battery

You know the battery is disappearing faster than it should. What you don't know is what's eating it — and until you know that, every fix is guesswork: dimming the screen, closing apps, toggling settings, hoping something sticks.

Once you have a suspect, it helps to know why apps drain power in the background, because the cause points at the fix.

1. It keeps waking the phone up. Phones save power by dropping into a deep sleep between tasks. Apps that repeatedly wake the device — polling a server every minute instead of waiting for a push notification, retrying a sync that keeps failing — prevent that sleep. This is the classic profile of an app that "suddenly" got worse after an update or after its login expired: it's stuck in a retry loop.

2. It holds the location or the radio open. An app with location permission set to Always can wake the GPS and network repeatedly all day. Fitness, weather, delivery, and shopping apps are common offenders. Very little other than live turn-by-turn navigation genuinely needs "Always" instead of "While Using the App."

3. It's doing real work you forgot about. Cloud photo backup, podcast downloads, a big sync after you added an account. These are legitimate and usually temporary — check the list again tomorrow before blaming them.

Confirm your suspect with a one-day test

The list tells you what correlated with the drain, not what caused it. Before you delete anything, run a cheap test that turns a guess into an answer.

  1. Charge to 100% and note the time, so the Android list resets to a clean window.
